The initial bosses yield fewer souls, but the further into the game, the more souls you’ll acquire. However, using souls in this way is the least recommended way. These are unique souls that you get once per playthrough, so it is worth considering what to use them for.

More than a decade after Demon’s Souls was released on PlayStation 3, where it delighted, perplexed, and infuriated players, a new take on the game is coming to PlayStation 5. Developer Bluepoint Games, which created 2017’s Shadow of the Colossus remake, is rebuilding Demon’s Souls from the ground up. It’s a glossier, more refined version of the PS3 classic, but one that stays true to the original’s gameplay and level of difficulty. These include two armor sets, a shield, sword, and a lot of “free” Souls. Whether these items will remain exclusive to the Digital Deluxe Edition or make it into the regular editions of the remake is not yet known. Players level up by spending souls acquired from defeating enemies and bosses throughout the game.

I miss the silly Cat’s Ring icon — a photo of a cat, which I always assumed to be one of the developer’s pets. [newline]I miss some of the original translations and language choices. Demon’s Souls went from a PS3 sleeper hit, one that Sony chose not to publish out of Japan, to a marquee PS5 launch title. The greatest improvements come from a combination of a decade’s worth of technical advancements.

Maybe Bluepoint will work on adding even more items to the game in the future. His adventure with Gamepressure began in 2019 when he undertook the difficult art of writing complex game guides. Over the years, became a specialist genre; in his spare time, he reads about mixtures that will help him reduce stress after the thousandth death at the same stage of the game. It meant that Demon’s Souls jumped out as being something newly obtuse and difficult. When, in reality, this was pretty much to be expected if you knew what kind of games From Software tended to make. This unorthodox weapon deals both Physical and Magic damage, giving it various damage types to exploit enemy weaknesses. This is also one of the few weapons capable of two S Ranks in damage scaling with both Strength and Dexterity. This crude blade also has the added benefit of restoring 1% of player health with every successful strike, making it a mechanical antithesis to other Demon’s Souls weapons that hurt the wielder.

One of only two weapons occupying Demon’s Souls’ Very Large Swords category, the Dragon Bone Smasher is, as the name implies, a massive weapon forged with the intent of aiding in battle against dragons. With a strength requirement of 30 and B damage scaling in that stat, it’s an excellent mid-to-late game weapon for Strength builds. Ironically enough, it’s not all that useful against the Dragon God due to the puzzle-like design of the fight. The Crescent Falchion isn’t well-suited for all builds, but it’s a must-have for anyone focusing on magic. The weapon scales very well with your Magic stat, and it allows you to passively regenerate mana while it is equipped.

Bosses drop Demon Souls and while you can devour these for Souls, it’s better to use them to create unique weapons as well as learn new spells and miracles. With all that in mind, it’s wonderful that Bluepoint Games mostly ignored all of the newer Souls games and thoroughly nailed this remake of Demon’s Souls. Showing that From Software has to finally pull its socks up and make something new for a change. For those interested, I have a long and storied history with From Software’s various games over the years. Having played and finished every Armored Core game to date, thrashed the various Another Century’s Episode games and rinsed the likes of Metal Wolf Chaos.
